Our Experience : Victorian Eye Care Service -Looking to the Future -2010
Victorian Eye Care Service "Looking to the Future" 2010
The Victorian Eye care Service [VES] is funded by the Department of Health through the Australian College of Optometry to provide disadvantaged Victorians in rural areas with access to low cost eye care and visual aids. Rural services are provided through a network of private eye care practitioners (predominantly optometrists) and administered by the ACO. Over 150 practitioners deliver services through 88 locations in country Victoria.
The purpose of the review was to identify critical issues that determine whether VES practitioners and practices remain or withdraw from VES Rural and present recommendations for a sustainable VES Rural service, including alternative sustainable service models to achieve DH service targets.
Practitioners from across Victoria completed an online survey. The survey included questions for current, previous and potential VES Rural providers. The survey questions sought to identify how VES Rural has been provided and the benefits and challenges for providers. Respondents were also asked to identify future improvements. Interviews in person or via telephone were also conducted with current, previous and potential provider; and other organisational representatives.
A report documenting the findings of the review and recommendations was prepared by LDC Group for the Department of Health and the Australian College of Optometry.
